Red Tail Ridge is a young vineyard (2007) on the west side of Seneca Lake. They are LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). They are focused on quality as they have a limited production.
They produce white, sparkling but a majority of reds. Riesling, Chardonnay and a bit of Gewürztraminer for the whites and Pinot noir, Blaufränkish, Dornfelder, Teroldego and Lagrein (natives grapes) for the reds.
Reds were really fruity, with black plum, black cherry, spicies, raspberry notes. Oak was really well integrated with soft tannins. Mostly in european style.
Whites were classics except for the orange wine (50/50 gewürzt+chard co fermented with skin contact) and the Riesling botrytised late harvest.
It is a small winery but really focused on quality and they do pretty well the job, it is great to see some « experimentation » in winemaking here!
The orange wine called Miscreant 2017 was a surprising discover but I really enjoyed the Riesling botrytised late harvest called The Noble Pursuit 2018! Hand harvested and hand selected. Apricots, honey, pineapple, orange oil on the nose. Full bodied and great balance between sugar and acidity, a bright freshness with an everlasting finish!
